Xestobium plumbeum , also known as the thick-footed pound beetle , belongs to the family of rodent beetles (Ptinidae).

features

The beetles reach a size of 3–5.7 mm. Their basic color is metallic black-green. The antennae and the margins of the pronotum are reddish brown. The three outermost links of the 11-part antennae are elongated. The elytra are lightly hairy.

Occurrence and way of life

The species is common in Central and Southern Europe. To the north, their occurrence extends to Denmark and England. In the east the distribution area extends over Asia Minor to the Middle East .

The typical habitat of the xylobiont beetles is old and dead wood in forests and at the edges of forests. The beetle species is often found in mixed beech forests (Fagetalia). The larvae develop in dry, white rotten branches of deciduous trees, especially the common beech ( Fagus sylvatica ). The adult beetles can be seen from April to September. They often stay on hawthorns ( Crataegus ). They feed on pollen and flower nectar.
