Xfrog is software from Xfrog Inc. (Los Angeles) for the photorealistic modeling and animation of 3D plants and other organic structures.
The program was written in 1996 at the University of Karlsruhe as part of a diploma thesis and has since been further developed artistically and scientifically at the Center for Art and Media Technology (ZKM). The developers are Bernd Lintermann and Oliver Deussen.
Standalone version
The standalone software Xfrog presents itself to the user as an integrated modeling environment. With Xfrog, digital plants or organic models are assembled from individual components under a clear user interface , which the user connects to form a graph. The graph thus describes the entire structural structure of the respective model.
Plug-in version
The completely rewritten Xfrog 4 is integrated as a plug-in directly into the respective 3D application and is currently available for Cinema 4D and Maya , but is planned for other programs, including a. 3ds Max and LightWave . This means that all functions of Xfrog (such as branch structures) can be combined with those of the 3D application (such as animations).
Plant libraries
In order not to have to model all possible digital plants yourself, greenworks organic software offers not only the Xfrog software, but also an extensive collection of professional plant models - the XfrogPlants. Over 1200 plant models of more than 350 species are available in a total of 20 libraries.
The program is intended for both amateur and professional use, as it can be exported into a wide variety of formats and integrated into many 3D programs via plug-in or import filters.
Xfrog can be used in architecture , landscape planning and botany , but is also used in computer games and films .
