ξ Persei ( Xi Persei ), proper name Menkib , also transcribed as Menkhib or Menchib , comes from Arabic منكب, "shoulder", is a star of the spectral class O7.5 with an apparent magnitude of 4.1 mag. This makes it one of the few O stars in the sky that can be observed with the naked eye. Ξ Persei is believed to be a runaway star of the Perseus OB2 Association and is responsible for the ionization of NGC 1499 (the California Nebula).
