Xlendi
Xlendi is a small town in the southwest part of the island of Gozo in the Republic of Malta . It belongs to the municipality of Munxar and therefore does not have its own coat of arms.
location
The place is about three kilometers southeast of Victoria , on a fjord- like bay cut about 500 meters into the land , which is about 70 meters wide at its narrowest point. At the end of the bay there is a sandy beach with a small promenade. On both sides of the bay, rocks fall steeply into the sea. Roads lead to Xlendi from Victoria and Sannat .
history
The first written mention of the village took place on April 19, 1550 under the name "Xilendi". The Romans already used the port of Xlendi because it offered protection in bad weather. In the middle of the bay is a reef that killed numerous Roman ships. Today one lives in the former fishing village mainly from tourism.
The asteroid (55082) Xlendi was named after the place in 2004 .
Attractions
- The church of Xlendi is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel . The facade dates from 1868, the rear part was extended in 1969. In 1974 the church was rededicated.
- A white statue of St. Andrew , the patron saint of fishermen, stands over the harbor.
- At the entrance to the bay, the Xlendi Tower , which was built in 1650, rises on a rock . Today it is the oldest free-standing defense tower on the island of Gozo.
- A narrow path leads on the northern side of the bay from the village to Caroline Cave , a small rock cave that once belonged to Caroline Cauchi, a wealthy woman from Victoria .
- The Catherine of Siena Cave is on the north side, outside the bay. It bears your name after Saint Catherine of Siena .
- Xlendi is particularly popular with scuba divers , there are several diving schools in town.
