xmltv is a collection of Perl scripts with which TV information can be read from various sources and output in the open XML format.
background
The individual scripts are called grabbers . While the grabber for North America communicates via interfaces specially created for xmltv according to official agreements, there are mostly only scripts that download the television program less efficiently from the Internet pages of various television magazines. Due to changes in the layout and efforts by webmasters to prevent reading by unauthorized scripts, these do not always work reliably. In addition, this procedure is illegal, as database works are protected by copyright and the operators usually prohibit automated reading of their websites in their general terms and conditions. However, there are a small number of legal sources that provide licensed material through xmltv interfaces.
Usability
The XML file generated by xmltv can be read and processed by many programs. An example of this is the PVR program MythTV , the TV display program tvtime or small applets such as OnTV for the Gnome desktop. Even my media system (MMS) used xmltv.
As VG Media charges fees for EPG data from most of the private German television stations , the use of xmltv is further restricted, since from January 1, 2008, many websites will no longer be able to provide free broadcast data from these stations. The data are now subject to a right of exploitation, which must be purchased for a not inconsiderable fee.
