Xorides praecatorius is anichneumon wasp (family Ichneumonidae) from the subfamily Xoridinae .
features
The parasitic wasps, which are mainly black in color, reach a body length of 10–15 mm. There is a rust-colored spot on the temples. The eyes are rimmed white on the inside. The antennae of the females are black with the exception of a white band not far from the antennae tip. The antennae of the males are completely black. The wing mark is white at the base. The predominantly reddish colored legs are white at the base of the tibia . The first segment (tergite) of the metasoma has dorsal carinae and mediolateral furrows. The metasoma is completely black in the male. With the exception of the first tergite, the tergites of the female have a white rear border. The female has a curved ovipositor.
distribution and habitat
Xorides praecatorius is a Palearctic species. Its range extends from Europe to China. The species is widespread and common in Europe. It is also found in the British Isles and southern Scandinavia. The parasitic wasps are often observed on the dead wood of conifers and deciduous trees.
Way of life
Xorides praecatorius parasitized larvae of Bock and jewel beetles that develop under the bark of trees.
The hosts include the following species, among others:
- Aromia moschata - musk billy
- Callidium aeneum - Blue colored disc buck
- Callidium violaceum - blue-violet disc buck
- Leiopus nebulosus - Brown-gray saplings
- Phymatodes pusillus - small disc buck
- Phymatodes testaceus - Variable Schönbock
- Pyrrhidium sanguineum - Red-haired buck
- Saperda scalaris - ladder rack
- Tetropium castaneum - Common spruce sapling buck
- Tetropium fuscum - Brown spruce goat
Xorides praecatorius is an idiobiont ectoparasitoid . The beetle larvae are paralyzed by the female parasitic wasp with a sting and then an egg is laid on them. The hatching larva feeds on the host larva from the outside. The larva eventually pupates. The adult parasitic wasps fly from April to August.
Taxonomy
Xorides praecatorius is assigned to the subgenus Xorides .
There are two subspecies:
- Xorides praecatorius funebris
- Xorides praecatorius rufigaster
In the literature there are the following synonyms :
- Ichneumon articulatus Geoffroy , 1785
- Ichneumon falsatorius Olivier , 1792
- Ichneumon praecatorius Fabricius , 1793
