Xu Lei

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Xu Lei ( Chinese 徐 累 ) (* 1963 in Nantong , Jiangsu , China ) is a visual artist and editor-in-chief of the art magazine Classic . He currently works at the Creation Research Center of the China Academy of Art and is Art Director at the Today Art Museum . His career began when he graduated from Nanjing University of the Arts in 1984. He gave several lectures in 2008 at the Library of Congress in Washington on the subject of "The Revival of Tradition in Contemporary Chinese Art" .

Work

In his work, Xu refers to the Song and Ming dynasties and uses traditional tools and equipment to go with them, namely rice paper and ink brushes as well as woodcuts , but has also reflected modern- surreal European artists such as René Magritte , Yves Klein and Marcel Duchamp whose vocabulary is present.

His works show finely drawn horses, chairs from the Ming period, butterflies or birds as if on a stage - they appear like virtual spaces between curtains or screens that are embroidered with old cards. Through this subtle interplay of motifs, the relationship between “emptiness” and “existence”, which represent the essence of traditional Chinese philosophy and aesthetics, is credibly presented in a modern language.

Xu Lei is the Château Mouton-Rothschild bottle label artist of the year 2008. Many of his works can be found in many renowned art galleries.
