Xylophagus ater ( Syn. X. compeditus ) is a fly from the family of wood flies (Xylophagidae).

features

The flies reach a body length of 8 to 15 millimeters and have a slim, cylindrical body. Her head is covered in gray, only a shiny callus is above the antennae. The basal antenna segment is at least three times longer than wide, but less than twice as long in the other species of the genus. The mesonotum is glossy black in the males, in the females three broad, somewhat lighter stripes can be seen. The wings are transparent, but darkened around the cross veins. The swinging bulbs ( holders ) are white, the legs are reddish-brown, the rails ( tibia ) of the hind legs and all the tarsi are darkened at least distally.

Occurrence and way of life

The species is common in Central and Northern Europe. The adults only have a short life expectancy and fly in May. The females can occasionally be seen vibrating their wings while sitting.
