Xyphosia miliaria is a fly from the family of bored flies (Tephritidae).

features

The flies reach a body length of 5.0 to 8.0 millimeters. The thorax and abdomen are yellowish in color, the mesonotum is longer than it is wide. The thoracic scales protrude above the wing scales, the two posterior orbital bristles point to the midline. The jaws are about as high as the width of the last antenna element. The wings are provided with a distinctive network drawing, which is darkened at the tip and the two cross veins.

Occurrence and way of life

The animals are found all over Europe, and further east to the Altai Mountains . The adults fly from May to July and stay on thistles, in whose inflorescences the larvae develop.
