Yūichirō Itō

Yūichirō Itō ( Japanese 伊藤 祐 一郎 , Itō Yūichirō ; born November 17, 1947 in Izumi , Kagoshima Prefecture ) is a non-party Japanese politician and was governor of Kagoshima from 2004 to 2016 .

Life

After graduating from the Law Faculty of the University of Tokyo, Itō became a civil servant in the then Ministry of the Interior , then in the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communication , where he rose to Deputy State Secretary / Vice Minister ( daijin-kambō-shingikan ) in 2001 and again in 2004 . From 2003 to 2004 he headed the Ministry's “Academy for Local Self-Government” ( jichi-daigakkō ). In February 2004, Ito left the ministry to apply to succeed Governor Tatsuro Suga , who did not run for a third term at the age of 79.

In the gubernatorial election in Kagoshima on July 11, 2004, Itō sat down against Kōji Mizoguchi, a former member of the prefectural parliament, and two rejected candidates. In 2008 he was re-elected with a low turnout of 39% with only one CPJ-supported opposing candidate and the support of all other parties in the prefectural parliament ( LDP , DPJ , Kōmeitō , SDP ). Ito's current second term ends in July 2012. In the gubernatorial election on July 8, 2012 , he was clearly confirmed for a third term against a CPJ-supported anti-nuclear opponent.

During his time as governor, Kagoshima rose from the group of the financially weakest prefectures to the second weakest group according to the classification of the Interior Ministry ("financial strength index " zaiseiryoku shisū : 2004: 0.263; 2007: 0.308). Among other things, he wants to rehabilitate the prefecture budget and use the geographical proximity of Kagoshima to China to promote the economy of the prefecture.

In the 2016 gubernatorial election, Itō was defeated by LDP-Kōmeitō support from the DP- SDP-supported former journalist Satoshi Mitazono . In the 2020 election he ran again against Mitazono (now supported by LDP and Kōmeitō) and was supported by the KDP Kagoshima, but both were subject to newcomer Kōichi Shiota .
