Yūjirō Kawamata ( Japanese 川 又 雄 二郎 , Kawamata Yūjirō ; born September 29, 1952 ) is a Japanese mathematician who deals with algebraic geometry and especially with the birational geometry of higher-dimensional algebraic varieties.

Kawamata completed his master's degree in mathematics at the University of Tokyo in 1977 , was then an assistant at the University of Mannheim and received his doctorate in Tokyo in 1980 with Shigeru Iitaka ( Characterization of abelian varieties ). As a post-doctoral student , he was a Miller Fellow at the University of California, Berkeley until 1983 . He is a professor at Tokyo University.

Kawamata was one of the driving forces in the program of minimal models in higher-dimensional algebraic geometry in the 1980s (with Shigefumi Mori , János Kollár , Miles Reid , Yōichi Miyaoka and others). The Kawamata-Viehweg-Vanishing theorem, a tightening of the Vanishing Law of Kodaira , and the rationality theorem of Kawamata are named after him and Eckart Viehweg . He classified two-dimensional canonical log singularities in the Minimal Model Program in 1988 .

In 1990 he received the Japanese Academy of Sciences Prize and in 1988 the Japanese Mathematical Society's Fall Prize . He was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Kyoto 1990 ( Canonical and minimal models of algebraic varieties ).
