Yaguarón is a city and a district in the Paraguarí department , 48 km from Asunción on the Yaguarón Hill in Paraguay . It is considered the cradle of the Guaraní mythology. The district has about 32,000 inhabitants. The place name is derived from the mythological creature Jaguarú - "big jaguar".

history

The founding of the village is attributed to the Spanish officer Domingo Martínez de Irala in 1539. The exact date is not known. The city administration set October 11th as the official date by resolution. In 1586 the Franciscan Luis de Bolaños established one of the first Indian reductions in Paraguay. They were mission settlements in which the natives found protection from the Spanish colonizers. This is the only reduction in which the original church still stands in its original form.

Cradle of the Guarani mythology

Along the old path to the 253 m high Yaguarón hill is the Paseo de los Mitos , on whose houses large murals can be seen. They tell how the world was created according to the Guarani beliefs. Accordingly, the Guaraní mythology began on the Yaguarón hill. Tupa , their highest god, created the universe there. He formed the first human couple from water and clay, Sypave (the mother of all people) and Rupave (the father of all people). After drying, he breathed life into them. He also left Angatupyry , the spirit of good, and Tau , the spirit of evil. The indescribably beautiful granddaughter of the two, Kerana , kindled the desire of Tau , who caught her , despite all efforts of Angatupyry to save her. From this union the seven sons of Kerana were born, monstrous seven-month children . The first born and most monstrous was called Jaguarú . They are the origin of all Guarani myths and legends. At the foot of the hill, the city put some sculptures in 2018, symbolizing the place that housed the seven brothers. Catholic faith and Indian mythology have come together in Yaguarón and every year during Holy Week the place brings more than 20,000 believers who make a pilgrimage to the Yaguarón hill to pray at the top in the two chapels Gamarra and Kurusu Guasu.

economy

In addition to the main branches of industry agriculture and livestock, clothing and sporting goods are produced. In 2017 a feed factory was opened with an investment of 212 million euros from the European Union.

education

In Yaguarón there is a branch of the Universidad Técnica de Comercialización y Desarrollo - UTCD.

museum

Yaguarón is home to the museum of the dictator José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia , who ruled Paraguay from 1814 to 1840. It is housed in the house of his father, Capitán José Engracia García de Francia , where he spent his summer holidays. It was built between 1770 and 1780 in the typical Paraguayan country house style. The house was also the local administrative seat of the Spanish Crown's Tobacco Service, which was run by his father.
