Yakın Ertürk

Yakın Ertürk (* 1945 in Kihalisçik ) is a Turkish sociologist . From 2003 to 2009 she was the UN Special Rapporteur on “Violence against Women”.

Live and act

Ertürk studied development sociology at the University of Riyadh in Saudi Arabia and received his PhD from Cornell University in the United States in 1980 .

From 1983 to 1986 she taught at Hacettepe University in Ankara , and since 1986 she has been Professor of Sociology at the Technical University of the Middle East in Ankara. Her areas of interest are development policy , human rights issues and women's rights .

Between 1997 and 2001, Ertürk interrupted her work at the Technical University and worked at the United Nations , initially as a director at the research institute INSTRAW ( International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women ) in Santo Domingo , then from 1999 in the women's advancement department at the UN - Headquarters in New York. In 2003 she was appointed Special Rapporteur on "Violence against Women" by the UN Commission on Human Rights . She is a member of the board of directors of UNRISD ( United Nations Research Institute for Social Development ).

As a UN special rapporteur, Ertürk campaigned for the introduction of laws against domestic violence . In July 2007, Ertürk reported on massive violence against women in South Kivu Province , DR Congo , beyond rape.
