Yakov Alksnis ( Latvian Jēkabs Alksnis , Russian Яков Иванович Алкснис ; born January 14, ^jul. / 26. January 1897 ^greg. In Naukseni , Governorate of Livonia ; † 28. July 1938 in Moscow ) was a native Latvian and a Soviet officer, last commander of the Air Force of the Soviet Union (1931–1937).

Life

Alksnis served in World War I and later also fought in the Russian Civil War . After his training in the Soviet military academy " M. W. Frunze " he rose to the position of commander-in-chief in the air force of the Red Army. During his tenure as Deputy Commander-in-Chief (1926–1931), the cooperation with the German Reichswehr that had begun under Pyotr Baranov , his predecessor as Commander-in-Chief, and in particular the operation of the Lipetsk Aviation School , continued.

Alksnis took part in June 1937 as a military judge in the Moscow military trial against Marshal Tukhachevsky and other high-ranking generals, in which all of the accused were sentenced to death. He was on 23 November 1937 at the wake of the Great Terror arrested, accused of establishing a fascist Latvian organization and on July 28, 1938 shot . After the end of the Stalin era he was rehabilitated.

Awards

Alksnis was a bearer of the Order of Lenin , twice bearer of the Order of the Red Banner and bearer of the Order of Red Star .
