Yamaguchi Kayo

Yamaguchi Kayō ( Japanese 山口 華 楊 , real name Yamaguchi Yonejirō ( 山口 米 次郎 ); born October 3, 1899 in Kyoto , died March 16, 1984 ) was a Japanese painter in the Nihonga style.

Live and act

Yamaguchi was born in Kyoto. In 1912, when he was thirteen, he became a student of Nishimura Goun ( 西村 五 雲 ; 1877–1938).

In 1914 he exhibited a picture at an exhibition of the Kyōto Art Society ( 京都 美術 協会 , Kyōto bijutsu kyōkai ). In 1916 he entered the "Municipal School for Painting" ( 京都 市立 絵 画 専 門 学校 , Kyōto shiritsu kaiga semmon gakkō ). In the same year Yamaguchi was awarded at the 10th Colorful , and it happened again at the 12th exhibition.

After completing his training, Yamaguchi became a student of Takeuchi Seihō and exhibited repeatedly at the successor institution of the colorful, the Teikoku bijutsu tenrankai , abbreviated to Teiten . - From 1927 on, Yamaguchi also exhibited at the Shinshō-sha ( 新 湘 社 ) exhibitions organized by Goun's students. - In Germany he was shown at the exhibition of Japanese painting in Berlin in 1931 .

In 1936, Yamaguchi became an assistant professor at his art school, a position he held until 1949. After the war he exhibited animal pictures at the successor institution of the Teiten, the Nihon bijutsu tenrankai , or Nitten for short . His animal pictures were designed realistically, but are painted with psychological delicacy.

In 1956 Yamaguchi was awarded the Japanese Academy of Arts Prize, and in 1971 he became a member of the Academy himself. In 1980 he was named a person with special cultural merits and was awarded the Order of Culture in 1981.

Representative works are “Western Dogs” ( 洋 犬 図 , Yōken-zu ; 1937) in the National Museum of Modern Art Tokyo and “Pony” ( 子 馬 , Kouma ; 1952) in the Museum of the Academy of Arts.

Remarks

  1. Bunten ( 文 展 ) stands for Monbushō bijtsutu tenrankai ( 文部省 美術展 覧 会 ). That was the art exhibition organized by the Ministry of Culture from 1917 onwards.
