Fukuda Keiichi: Edo period couple

The exhibition of works by living Japanese painters took place from January 17, 1931 to February 28, 1931 in the Prussian Academy of the Arts , Berlin .

prehistory

The former German ambassador to Japan, Wilhelm Solf , organized, together with the director of the East Asian department of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin , Otto Kümmel , an exhibition of modern Japanese painting in Berlin, which took place in early 1931. The preparatory committees with a total of more than 100 people were structured as follows:

  • The Japanese Working Committee was headed by Fukuhara Ryōjirō and comprised three representatives from the Japanese Foreign Ministry, seven representatives from the Ministry of Culture, including Kume Keiichiro , two members of the German Embassy in Tokyo, five people from the Japanese-German Cultural Institute, including the managing director Wilhelm Gundert , 11 painters as Members of the Imperial Academy of Arts , four members of Nihon Bijutsuin.
  • The German working committee was headed by Solf. It consisted of 12 members, including the art experts A. Amersdorffer, W. Cohen , L. Reidemeister , H. v. Klemperer, Curt Glaser , Caraway.
  • The Japanese Honorary Committee consisted of seven people, including Foreign Minister Shidehara Kijūrō and Minister of Culture Tanaka Ryūzō.
  • The German Honorary Committee comprised about 50 people, including
    • From the political field, the Reich Ministers for Foreign Affairs and the Interior, Prussian Ministers, Ambassadors,

The exhibition catalog has 108 pages. It contains an introduction to Japanese art, written by Yashiro Yukio, as well as a list of the 143 artists on display with brief notes on each person and a selection of 32 images in black and white.
