Erwin Müller (painter)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Erwin Müller (* 1893 in Reichenberg ; † 1978 in Naumburg (Saale) ) was a German-Bohemian painter of the New Objectivity . He belonged to the second generation of German-speaking visual artists from Bohemia , Moravia and Silesia .

Life

Erwin Müller studied at the visual academy in Vienna. He came to Naumburg immediately after World War II. In 1946 he took part in the first post-war exhibition “Naumburg Artists”. Until 1958 he worked as a freelance painter and commercial artist. Two years earlier, the graphics section of the Association of Visual Artists had tried to revoke Müller's association membership - and thus his livelihood - officially because of the allegedly low level of his graphic work. In addition, Müller refused the social commitment that was generally expected during the GDR era.

In retirement, to improve his tight financial situation, he occasionally painted simple rural idylls from postcard motifs and portraits from photos. For all the years from 1946 until his death he lived and worked in a room on Naumburgs Burgstrasse in an apartment that he had to share with a family.

Erwin Müller's career began in Czechoslovakia between the wars and ended with the Second World War and its aftermath. As a middle-aged Sudeten German resettled in the GDR, he was denied a new artistic start. The artist found no place in the collective memory of Czechoslovakia or that of the GDR.

Erwin Müller's only independent exhibition in his time as an aspiring artist took place in Reichenberg in 1925.

"He [Müller] looks at his fellow human beings with a sense of humor that does not appear scornful or hurtful, that does not make people look ridiculous, that rather wants to describe the weaknesses of life in his own way."

- Oskar Fürstenau, art critic (1925)

His friendship with the Czech Jaro Beran, the first director of the Reichenberg Gemäldegalerie, saved large parts of his works from destruction after the Second World War. And when Müller was expelled from Reichenberg and had to leave the studio and apartment in a hurry, only 24 pictures survived that were in the studio of the sculptor Theodor Malléner at that time; everything else was apparently destroyed and scattered, and the birthplace was torn down.

In 2014, the gallery in Liberec (formerly Reichenberg), the city of his birth, presented the first major exhibition of Müller's works for the first time in decades. The pictures come from the Liberec Regional Gallery and private collections there. The basis of the exhibition was the research work of the exhibition curator Anna Habánová over several years. This exhibition was shown to a similar extent in Naumburg.
