Yamamoto Shunkyo ( Japanese 山 元 春 挙 ; born November 24, 1872 in Zeze ( Shiga Prefecture ); died July 12, 1933 ) was a Japanese painter of the Nihonga direction during the Meiji , Taishō and Shōwa periods .

life and work

Yamamoto had his first lessons in painting under Kōno Bairei and Nomura Bunkyo (野村 文 挙; 1854-1911), from whom he got his stage name Shunkyo . When Bunkyo went to Tōkyō, Yamamoto switched to Mori Kansai (1814-1894). He exhibited at the exhibitions of Kyōto Seinen Kaiga Kyōshin-kai (京都 青年 絵 画 共進 会), Naikoku Kangyō Hakuran-kai (内 国 勧 業 博 覧 会), Shin Kobjijutsuhin-ten (新 古 美術品 展), Nihon Bijutsu (Kyōkai-ten日本 美術 協会 展) and on other occasions, occasionally receiving awards. Towards the end of the Meiji period he was one of the leading artists in Kyōto alongside Takeuchi Seihō , where, in contrast to Takeuchi's relaxed style, he used an exact representation.

Yamamoto acted from the first exhibition of the Ministry of Culture, the Mombushi Bijutsu Tenrankai (文部省 美術展 覧 会) as a juror. He himself showed "雪松 図" (Yukimatsu-zu, pines under snow) at the 1st exhibition, the series "塩 原 の 奥" (Shiobara no oku, In the hinterland of Shiobara) at the 3rd exhibition and "春夏 秋冬 “(Shun-Ka-Shū-Tō, spring-summer-autumn-winter). He used an almost "western" style with dramatic landscapes based on precise studies of nature. He also used the technique of ink painting and that of the scattered pigments. The “義士 隠 柶” (Gishi Inji) shown on the 4th page in 1922 is an example of this, like the painting “雪景 図” (Sekkei-zu, snow landscape), which is similar in its painting style. - In 1931 Yamamoto was shown at the “Exhibition of Japanese Painting” in Berlin.

Yamamoto ran a private school “Sanae-kai” (早苗 会) and was a teacher at the “Kyōto shiritsu bijutsu kōgei gakkō” (京都 市立 美術 工 芸 学校) and at the “Kyoto shiritsu kaiga semmon gakkō” (京都 市立 美 門門 画 専 専 専 美 門学校) active. His students include Kawamura Manshū (川村 曼 舟; 1880–1942), Yamamoto Sōkyū (山 本 倉 丘; 1893–1993) and many others. As early as 1917 he was appointed artistic member of the court office (帝室 技 芸 員, Teishitsu gigei-in) and in 1919 a member of the Academy of Arts .
