Yamaha PSR ("PortaSound Regular") is a series of entertainment keyboards launched in 1984 by the Japanese company Yamaha Corporation . The range extends from the entry-level model to the high-end product for professional use.

history

The PSR series is a further development of the PS (PortaSound) series. After General MIDI, a manufacturer-independent standard for data transmission, was developed, Yamaha released the backward-compatible XG standard, which could now define 618 different instruments. For a long time, the connections were made for music-specific issues in addition to MIDI and jack for headphones. The 3.5 'floppy disk drive, which was increasingly integrated into mid-range and high-end models in the mid-1990s, is now being replaced by connections based on USB and Ethernet .

The display was fundamentally redesigned several times. If there were no displays at all in the first series, simple number displays for voice and rhythm followed later. Later, LCD -Displays which will initially transmitted with specified symbols and character information. With the PSR-320, an interactive display was introduced for the first time, which enabled various settings on the text level depending on the selection. These displays were initially monochrome, but now they are colored and using the example of the PSR-S900 in QVGA resolution with PAL / NTSC output.

Today's PSR keyboards are based on digital sampling technology . After the keyboards of the 7000, 8000 and 9000 series, Yamaha fell behind with its development compared to other manufacturers. In order to strengthen sales of keyboards in the upper price range again, the Tyros series relied on mega-voice technology . In addition to the sounds, playing noises (such as striking a guitar string) should also be implemented. Due to the complexity of this project, however, the first Tyros version could only be used for complex accompanying rhythms; this was only possible as a playing voice with the Super Articulation Voice of the Tyros 2. The fourth generation of the Tire came on the market in 2010. The new model Tyros 5 has been available since November 2013.

Models and equipment

All models of the PSR series now have numerous instrument sounds (voices), accompanying rhythms (styles) and a sequencer area (songs) as standard . With a few exceptions, all keyboards have built-in speakers. The other equipment features vary greatly, as the entire product range extends from simple keyboards with only 4-part polyphony to complete arrangements with integrated vocal modulations.

A specialty are the groove keyboard DJX PSR-D1 that goes towards synthesizers and its successor DJX 2 (or DJX-2b Groovebox), which include the filter function of a synthesizer.

Current (Nov. 2013) PSR models are:

  • Tyros 4/5 (strictly speaking, the Tyros series does not belong to the PSR keyboards. However, since it takes the place of the successor to the former top model PSR-9000, it is usually included)

  • PSR-S750 (middle class)
