Karl August Otto Hohnstein (born July 7, 1842 in Braunschweig ; † March 3, 1909 there ) was a German teacher and historian .

life and work

History of the Duchy of Braunschweig from 1908.

Hohnstein studied theology and history in Göttingen from 1862 . After graduating, he first became a teacher at a private school in Braunschweig, and in 1870 he switched to the secondary school for girls . From 1875 to 1896 he also taught at the private business school.

Hohnstein was a loyal supporter of the Welfen House and published numerous books and essays on the history of the city of Braunschweig as well as that of the Duchy of Braunschweig and the Braunschweiger Land . His best-known work is the History of the Duchy of Braunschweig , published in 1908 , which has long been a standard work on the subject.

In contrast to the sometimes academic, extensive and therefore also expensive works by Adolf Schaumann or Otto von Heinemann , Hohnstein's intention with his last work was to address a large audience in an understandable way: “The author wants a popular history book of the The Duchy of Braunschweig offer… " , whereby he imposed: " The present book is limited to Braunschweig and only goes into the history of the other Guelph possessions to the extent that it is absolutely necessary for understanding and context. "
