Yan Ruoqu ( Chinese  閻 若 璩  /  阎 若 璩 , Pinyin Yán Ruòqú , W.-G. Yen Jo-ch'ü ; born 1636 in Huai'an , Jiangsu ; died 1704 ), zi : Baishi 百 詩 , Pai-shihhao : Qianqiu 潛 丘  /  潜 邱 , was a Confucian scholar of the Qing Dynasty . He is considered the founder of the science of higher criticism of the classics. He was one of the greatest Confucian classical scholars of his time. He wrote most of his works on studying Confucian classics and historical geography. His main work is his study Guwen shangshu shuzheng 古文 尚书 疏 证 , on which he is said to have worked for thirty years. Through persuasive evidence and reasonable arguments, he proved beyond doubt that the Book of History in the Ancient Scriptures and the Book of History with a comment by Kong Anguo were forgeries. This finding was accepted by many scholars in the Qing Dynasty.
