The first iron ore mine to start operating in the Pilbara region was the Goldsworthy Mine in 1965. The iron ore produced was transported on the Goldsworthy Railway to the port facilities on Finucane Island and loaded onto ships. On June 1, 1966, the first shipload of Australian iron ore left this port aboard the Harvey S. Mudd .

Mining activities began in Yandi in 1991 and the first shipload of iron ore was produced in 1992. The production facility was renovated from 1994 to 2003 and has an annual capacity of 41 million tons of iron ore. The plant consists of a crusher, two production plants and two train loading stations.

After two fatal occupational accidents at the Yandi mine in September 2008, BHP closed the mine for 10 days to review work safety and had all of its other iron ore mines in the Pilbara region inspected.
