Newman is a mining town in the Pilbara Region in the Australian state of Western Australia . It is located 1,186 kilometers north of Perth , 450 km south of Port Hedland and nine kilometers north of the Tropic of Capricorn (Tropic of Capricorn). The city located in the desert has average temperatures of minimum 17.4 ° C and maximum 31.4 ° C and an annual rainfall of 310 millimeters. It lies at an altitude of 544  m .

Iron ore mountain

Newman was built by the Mount Newman Mining Company in the 1960s after rich iron ore deposits were discovered at nearby Mount Whaleback. The town owes its name to nearby Mount Newman, which was named in honor of AW Newman, an explorer who died of typhus in 1896 when he first arrived in the area.

Newman has its own airport, Newman Airport , and can be reached on the Great Northern Highway . There is a private railway line to Port Hedland, the ore shipping port for the world market. Newman also serves as a supply base for mining communities such as Tom Price and Paraburdoo .
