The forest area Osecký les extends southeast, in which the hills "Na pískách" (291 m) and Darebnice (248 m) rise. In the south lies the Voděrady desert.

history

Kněžice was first mentioned in writing in 1295 as the seat of Zdeslav from Kněžice, who had a fortress built here. The Kněžice family built the Podtvrzník pond below their seat, which divided the village into two halves, each with its own shoulder. From 1415 the village belonged to Jan Straník von Kopidlno , who fought as captain of the orphans in the Hussite Wars . At that time, the Kněžice lordship included the fortress and the village as well as Židovice , Záhornice , Voděrady and Mezilesí. The latter two became extinct in the 15th century. In 1501 Nikolaus the Younger Trčka von Lípa bought the lordship and joined them together with Štítary to his Dominium Königstädtel . In 1587 Zdeněk Waldstein struck Königstädtel under the rule of Dymokury . Kněžice was destroyed during the Thirty Years War. After that the village was rebuilt. In addition to the Podtvrzník, there was the 72 hectare Kněžický rybník, a second large pond in the village. In addition, there were three smaller fish ponds with the Vosecký rybník, Krčebník and Beňovický rybník. At the beginning of the 19th century a contribution store of the Dymokury rule was built in Kněžice, which was abolished in 1863. In 1810 the Podtvrzník dam was pierced and the pond drained.

After the abolition of patrimonial Kněžice formed from 1850 a municipality in the Poděbrady district . At the beginning of 1961 the municipality was assigned to the Okres Nymburk, at the same time the incorporation of Dubečno took place. In 1980 Osek was added.

In 2004 the municipality of Kněžice started the project of the energy self-sufficiency village Kněžice (ESO Kněžice) with the support of the European Regional Development Fund and the Czech state environmental fund. For this purpose, a central heating power plant and a biogas station were put into operation in 2006.

At the transition from the 19th to the 20th century, the legend of the knight Záhorský arose in Kněžice, who sat in a castle on Vondrový Kopec and fell in love with the princess at Kněžice castle.
