Archaeological finds on the Skála hill to the south-west above Kounice prove a settlement since the Neolithic around 3000 BC. Chr.

The first written mention of the place took place in 1257. At that time the owner was Zachar von Konice. His descendants Předbor and Nachval von Konice can be traced back as owners until 1297. In the 14th century there was probably a division of the goods, because in the years 1354 to 1358 Jan, Jiří and Zdeněk von Konice jointly appointed the pastor. Later, the citizen of Prague's Old Town , Ješek Rottl, bought some farms in Kounice. Petr von Konice, who owned the property in 1425, fought on the side of the Hussites . During the Hussite Wars, the Catholic priest was chased away and the parish became extinct. In 1438 Jan Kačice von Vrátkov, a relative of the Vilém von Konice, bought Kounice. After the branch of the Kačice von Konice Jiří Močík von Konice succeeded as the owner of a Kounice farm, with whose death the Konice dynasty died out in 1555. Other goods in the 16th century included Jan Vostuský Kaplirz de Sulewicz and the Wachtl von Pantenov. The Wachtl gradually acquired most of the goods from Kounice and had a Renaissance fortress built, which was first entered in the land table in 1554 . Joachim Wachtl von Pantenov, who had inherited Kounice from his brother in 1562, bought the remaining goods and combined them into one Kounice estate. Via Joachim's only daughter Anna, Kounice came to her second husband Prokop Dvořecký von Olbramovice, who in 1590 also bought the inheritance from his wife's first-wedded son, Joachim Šťastný Sturm von Hirschfeld.

In 1599 Prokop Dvořecký exchanged the rule with Jan Rudolf Trčka of Lípa for Želiv . His wife Maria Magdalena Lobkowitz loaned Rudolf II's war chest in 1601 and received several villages of the Přerov Chamberlain as pledges. In 1608 Trčka received his wife's pledged goods Nehvizdy , Nehvízdky, Vykáň , Kozovazy, Vyšehořovice , Horoušany , Bříství , Tatce and Pečky as hereditary property. In 1611 Mochov was added. This made the Kounice estate one of the largest in the area. Trčka had the old fortress transformed into a representative Renaissance chateau. In 1612 Johann Rudolf Trčka had the rule of Kounice ascribed to his wife on the land table. After her death in 1633 his son Adam Erdmann inherited Kounice. He was murdered in Eger in 1634 and Kounice was again owned by Johann Rudolf Trčka, who died in the same year. Ferdinand II had the Trčkas goods confiscated in 1635. In 1645, the Imperial Field Marshal Albert Gaston bought Spinola de Bruay Kounice. This fell less than a month later in the battle of Jankau . His son Philipp sold Kounice in 1667 to Ernst Ferdinand Leopold Graf von Suys. He began to rebuild the goods devastated by the Swedes in the Thirty Years War. In 1677 his underage son Franz Josef Anton Viktor inherited the rule of Kounice. He used the castle as a residence with his mother. On April 16, 1680, a peasant revolt broke out in the area, and before the castle was besieged, the de Suys family fled to Prague , from where Emperor Leopold I sent three regiments to Kounice. Franz de Suys died in 1691 and Kounice inherited his underage cousin Romedio Johann von Thun . The Counts of Thun sold the indebted rule in 1693 to the Prussian Field Marshal Johann Rudolf Count von Morzin. He had the castle expanded and a store built. The Counts Morzin held Kounice until 1760, after which Maria Theresia Anna Felicitas Princess of Liechtenstein acquired the indebted rule of Franz Xaver von Morzin. The widow had a new rectory built in 1762 and a hospital the following year. In 1763 she set up a fund for 14 apartments and a charity. After her death in 1772 Kounice fell to the Princely House of Liechtenstein. The Liechtensteiners use the rule primarily as one of their hunting grounds and the castle served as a summer residence. In 1781 Kounice consisted of 69 houses.

After the abolition of patrimonial Kounice with the districts Teinitz, Horka, Chrast and Manderscheid from 1850 a municipality in the district of Český Brod . In 1868 a plague epidemic broke out in Kounice, killing 68 residents. In 1869 a post office was established. On October 6, 1871, Kaunitz, which had grown to 223 houses and had 1977 residents, received the status of a market town. Between 1882 and 1884 the roads to Vykáň, Černíky and Poříčany were built. In 1925 the community bought the castle with the courtyard and 365 hectares of land from the Prince of Liechtenstein. In 1928 a community school was established in one part of the castle. In 1948 the status as a minority city was lost. The municipality of Kounice was assigned to the Okres Nymburk in 1961. In the summer of 1990 the castle burned out. School lessons then took place in makeshift arrangements until the new elementary school was completed in 1999. On October 10, 2006, Kounice received back the status of a Městys.

  • Kounice Castle, the fortress that has been documented since 1554, was rebuilt in the Renaissance style between 1567 and 1593 for Jíří Wachtl von Pantenov and his descendants. Johann Rudolf Trčka von Leipa had it redesigned into a representative three-winged castle between 1612 and 1634. In the middle of the 17th century, Ernst Ferdinand Leopold de Suys had the castle restored by the builder Christoph Lehner and intended to add a fourth wing, which was never realized. In 1693, Johann Rudolf von Morzin had the palace gardens laid out. Wenzel Graf Morzin had the palace redesigned in a baroque style around 1719, the plans may come from Johann Blasius Santini-Aichl . Ferdinand Maximilian Brokoff created the two Moorish statues at the castle entrance . The last major change was made in the years 1912–1913 by the architect Alfons Wertmüller. The castle was owned by the municipality in 1925, which acquired it from the Princes of Liechtenstein in 1925 and partially set up a citizens' school. From 1949 the whole castle served as a school building. Emergency repairs were carried out after the fire in 1990, after which the municipality decided to sell the property. This failed because the buyer failed to fulfill the contract. The municipality got the ruinous castle back from the bankruptcy estate in 2003 and sold it in 2004 to Castle Kounice sro, which wants to transform it into a luxury residential complex.
  • Church of St. James the Elder, which has been documented since 1350, was elevated to parish church in 1352. In 1769 a renovation took place, the tower was reduced by one storey. In the years 1834 to 1836 the churches received a new nave. Between 1988 and 1998 the church was renovated.
