Yannis Ioannidis

Yannis Ioannidis (born June 8, 1930 in Athens ) is a Greek composer.

Live and act

Ioannidis studied first at the Athens Conservatory and then at the Vienna Music Academy composition with Otto Siegl , orchestral direction with Hans Swarowsky , organ with Karl Walter , harpsichord with Eta Harich-Schneider and dodecaphony with Hanns Jelinek . Finally he took composition courses at the Darmstadt Summer Courses with Karlheinz Stockhausen , György Ligeti and Mauricio Kagel .

From 1968 to 1976 Ioannidis lived in Venezuela. He worked here as a guest conductor of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Venezuela and the Orquestra Sinfónica de Maracaibo . From 1969 to 1971 he directed the chamber orchestra and the choir of the Centro Venezolano Americano ; He was also the director of the Radio Nacional Chamber Orchestra, which he founded, and taught composition at the Universidad Metropolitana .

In 1968 his main work on music theory Μουσικ Musik ( music ) appeared in Greece, Austria and Germany . In 1970 he received the composition prize for his orchestral work Metaplasis A at the International Louis Moreau Gottschalk Competition .

After 1976 Ioannidis taught at various conservatories in Greece: the Orfeion in Athens (1976–81), the Conservatory Nikos Skalkottas (1978–89) and the Conservatory Phillippos Nakas (1989–92). In addition, he taught at the University of Athens from 1978 to 1983 and directed the university choir and was General Director of the National Symphony Orchestra of Athens from 1982 to 1989. From 1990 to 1993 he worked again as a lecturer in music at the University of Athens.

From 1983 to 2000 Ioannidis was President and Artistic Director of the Athens City Choir, and in 1984 he founded the National Youth Symphony Orchestra.
