Yannis Stavrakakis
Yannis Stavrakakis (Γιάννης Σταυρακάκης; born 1970 in Sheffield ) is a Greek-British political scientist and professor of political theory and discourse analysis at the Aristotle University in Thessaloniki . Stavrakakis' research, which is in the tradition of Ernesto Laclau's Essex School , deals with the relationship between Lacan's psychoanalysis and political theory as well as with discourse-theoretical analyzes of populism and ideology.
Career
Stavrakakis was born to Greek parents in Sheffield , UK . He studied Political Science at Panteion University in Athens and a Masters degree in Ideology and Discourse Analysis at Essex University . He then did his doctorate in 1996/97 with the renowned political theorist Ernesto Laclau with a discourse analysis work "New Directions in the Theory of Ideology and the Case of Green Ideology". After completing his dissertation, he taught at the Political and Social Sciences Institutes at Essex University, Nottingham University and Panteion University in Athens . In 2006 he accepted a professorship for political theory and discourse analysis at the Aristotle University in Thessaloniki .
Works and theory
Stavrakakis' research interests are contemporary political theories with a focus on poststructuralist and psychoanalytical approaches, social theories and theories of subjectification, radical democracy theories, criticism of ideology and political discourse analyzes, especially populist discourses. In recent years, as Principal Investigator of the research project POPULISMUS, he has dealt intensively with populist and anti-populist discourses, especially in southern Europe and Greece, which broke out as a result of the European debt crisis. As one of the leading Essex School researchers, he and his team applied and further developed the discourse theory developed by Ernesto Laclau.
He is co-editor and on the advisory board of the journals Psychoanalysis, Culture and Society (Palgrave), Subjectivity (Palgrave), Journal for Lacanian Studies and Synchrona Themata . Many of his works and publications have been translated into numerous languages, e.g. B. into Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Turkish, Russian, Bulgarian and German.
