The yap-eyeglass bird ( Zosterops oleagineus ) is a little-researched bird species from the eyeglass bird family . It is endemic to the island of Yap in the Western Carolines .

features

The Yapbrillenvogel reaches a size of 12.5 to 13 centimeters. It has a clear satin white eye ring, which is interrupted at the front by a blackish line of reins that extends under the eye. The top and the skull are predominantly brownish-citring-yellow. The hand wings and control feathers are blackish-brown with broad brownish edges. The throat is dull yellow and becomes brownish-citring-yellow towards the chin. The middle of the abdomen, the flanks and the rest of the underside are brownish-olive. The iris is reddish-white or reddish-brown. The bill is yellowish-orange, with the lower bill being darker. The sexes look the same. The female is probably darker in color than the male. The juvenile birds have not yet been described. The melodious singing consists of monotonously repeated loud whistled "fickle-éé-feedle-déé" phrases. The call is a shrill, harsh “cheee”.

habitat

The yap-eyed bird inhabits all forest types, including dense jungle, undergrowth near swamps, mangroves, or other forest vegetation.

Way of life

Little research has been done into his way of life. There is no information about its reproductive behavior, its migrations or its food. It can be observed singly, in small groups, or usually in pairs. It generally forages in the canopy of small or medium-sized trees. Typically for spectacled birds, it hangs upside down on the branches and examines leaves, flowers and fruits, especially the legumes of the genus Leucaena .

status

The range of the Yapbrillenvogel covers less than 100 km². The habitat on Yap Island has been declared an Endemic Bird Area by BirdLife International . During a search in the 1940s, the Yap-glasses bird was detected only twice, but was described as more widespread in the 1970s. In 1991 the population was estimated at 19,619 individuals. BirdLife International currently classifies him in the early warning list ( near threatened ).

Systematics

The Yapbrillenvogel was temporarily placed in the genera Kubaryum and Rukia . The data from the mtDNA analyzes showed, however, that it belongs to the genus Zosterops and is probably most closely related to the Semper's spectacle bird ( Zosterops semperi ).
