Yasushi Furukawa
Yasushi Furukawa ( Japanese 古 川 康 , Furukawa Yasushi ; born July 15, 1958 in Karatsu , Saga Prefecture ) is a Japanese politician. From 2003 to 2014 he was governor of Saga, since then he has been a member of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in the House of Representatives , the lower house of the national parliament .
Furukawa, a graduate of the law faculty of the University of Tokyo , became a civil servant in the Ministry of Self-Government after graduating in 1977 , for which he later worked in the prefectural administrations of Nagano , Okayama and Nagasaki and in 1997 as Secretary of the Minister under Mitsuhiro Uesugi . In January 2003, he ended his civil service career to run in the unified regional elections in April to succeed Sagas Governor Isamu Imoto , who retired after three terms.
In a field of six candidates, Furukawa, whose candidacy was supported by the LDP, prevailed by around 13,000 votes ahead of former prefectural parliament president Iwamasa Miyahara. In 2007 and 2011 he was confirmed in office against only one candidate, the communist Masakatsu Hirabayashi. The controversial topics of his term of office included his approval in 2008 for the introduction of MOX fuel elements at the Genkai nuclear power plant , the dispute over the Isahaya dam in the neighboring prefecture of Nagasaki, against whose closure by the central government the local fishing cooperatives with the support of Furukawa have opposed for years (provisional Opening by the Kan cabinet in 2010), and a scandal over inadequate meat export controls by the prefectural authorities in 2009.
During his third term, Furukawa resigned in November 2014 to seek a move to national politics in the 2014 House of Representatives election . He ran for the LDP in the constituency Saga 2, which was newly tailored in 2013, and prevailed against the Democrat Hiroshi Ōgushi . In 2017 he was narrowly defeated by Ōgushi (now Hope Party ), but won one of the seven LDP seats in the proportional representation in Kyūshū as the best constituency loser .
