Yautepec (officially: Yautepec de Zaragoza ) is a city and capital of the Municipio Yautepec . It is located in the Mexican state of Morelos . At the 2010 census, Yautepec had 42,731 inhabitants.
Archaeological digs have shown that this area was originally inhabited by the Olmecs .
At the time of the Aztecs , Yautepec had great political importance and influence on several city-states. Yautepec was the largest city in the region and had a magnificent royal palace. The Aztec rule lasted until 1521. In that year the city was conquered by Hernán Cortés during his campaign around Lake Texcoco .
