The Yayoi ( Japanese 弥 生 , Eng. "March") was a destroyer of the Mutsuki class of the Imperial Japanese Navy .

history

The ship was built by the Uraga Dock Co. and was launched on July 11, 1925. The commissioning took place on August 28, 1926 and on August 1, 1928 it was baptized with the name Yayoi , as it was previously only named with a number (No. 23).

In the Pacific War , the ship took part in the Battle of Wake , Operation MO , and the Battle of the East Solomon Islands (where survivors of the Mutsuki were taken). During the evacuation of Japanese troops as part of Operation Ke , the ship was attacked by US aircraft on September 11, 1942 and at 8 ° 45 ′  S , 151 ° 25 ′  E. Coordinates: 8 ° 45 ′ 0 ″  S , 151 ° 25 ′ 0 ″  O abandoned. The Mochizuki and Isokaze later took in 88 survivors from Normanby Island .
