The Kisaragi ( Japanese 如月 , eng . "February") was a destroyer of the Mutsuki class of the Imperial Japanese Navy .

history

The ship was built at the Maizuru naval shipyard and was launched there on June 5, 1925. The commissioning took place on December 21, 1925.

The Kisaragi was sunk four days after the attack on Pearl Harbor , making it the second major warship that the Japanese lost in the Pacific War (after the Hayate ).

The ship had left Truk for Wake and took part in the Battle of Wake . It supported the Japanese 'first attempt to land on December 11th. While the Kisaragi was retreating from the fighting, the destroyer was attacked by four American Grumman F4Fs . The pilot Henry T. Elrod managed to hit the stern of the Kisaragi with 100-pound bombs, causing the depth charges stored there to explode. As a result, the destroyer decreased approximately 48 km south west of Wake at 18 ° 55 '  N , 166 ° 17'  O coordinates: 18 ° 55 '0 "  N , 166 ° 17' 0 '  O . The entire crew was killed.
