The Kikuzuki ( Japanese 菊 月 , dt. "September", literally: " Chrysanthemum moon") was a destroyer of the Mutsuki class of the Imperial Japanese Navy .
history
The ship was built at the Maizuru naval shipyard and was launched there on May 15, 1926. The commissioning took place on November 20, 1926 and in 1928 it was baptized with the name Kikuzuki , as it was previously only named with a number (No. 31).
During World War II it supported the Japanese landings in the Solomon Islands , Lae and the Admiralty Islands . During the sea battle off Tulagi in the course of the Japanese occupation of the island in May 1942, the ship was bombed by aircraft of the American carrier Yorktown in the port of Tulagi, killing 12 crew members and injuring 22 others. The ship was pulled onto the beach on Gatuvu Island , slipped back into the sea at the next tide and sank at 9 ° 7 ′ S , 160 ° 12 ′ E. .
After the capture of Tulagi, the wreck was recovered and examined by the USS Prometheus in the hope of military intelligence.
The ship was removed from the ship register on May 25, 1942.
