Topics of his literary work came from the "Literary Study Society", which he let appear in his stories. These stories deal with the problems of the individual in China who have been affected by radical social changes and who suffered from loneliness and alienation. He also talked about other social problems such as the oppression of women and problems in the upbringing of students, pupils and teachers.

Ye Shegtao's stories document the political and social conditions and upheavals in the Chinese republic . He represents one of the most outstanding personalities of the new Chinese literature as well as the "Literary Study Society" and the "League of Left-Wing Writers".
