Katy Yslas-Yent
Katherine Marie "Katy" Yslas-Yent (born October 28, 1942 in Seligman , Arizona , † March 29, 2003 in Barstow , California ) was the mayor of the Californian city of Barstow.
Ysla's family moved to California early in search of work, Katy attended Barstow High School which she graduated in 1960. After two years of training, she received an associate degree at the University of La Verne and became a paralegal. From 1980 Yslas-Yent worked at the court in Barstow. In 1994 she was elected to the Barstow City Council. In the mayoral elections in 1996, she prevailed with 47% of the votes against four competitors and thus succeeded Mal Wessel, who was no longer running . Katy Yslas-Yent was Barstow's first Latino mayor. In the 2000 election she was clearly defeated by Republican challenger Lawrence E. Dale .
Katy Yslas-Yent died of cancer in 2003 at the age of 61 .
