Yetta dwarf
Yetta Zwerling (born December 25, 1894 in Kohliev, near Lemberg , Austria-Hungary , † January 17, 1982 in Los Angeles ) was an Austro-American actress and singer . In the United States, she has appeared in theater, vaudeville , radio and films, in both Yiddish and English.
Life
Her father, who worked in a fruit store, was a klezmer . She came to the stage early through her sisters Bessie and Mamie, who performed in the choir of the Jewish theater in Lviv. She and her family emigrated to the United States at a young age , where she graduated from high school . She then performed at the theater and in vaudeville.
In Chicago she came to the Yiddish theater. She then performed in New York in both Yiddish and English-language plays and numbers. She then played for six years in Philadelphia , then again in New York and also toured the United States, Canada and Mexico.
In addition to Yitskhok Feld, Julius Nathanson, Eli Mintz, Isidore Meltzer, Adof Fenigshtayn, Irving Jacobson and later Menasha Skulnik and Leo Fuchs , she starred in Yiddish films , including "Motel the Operator" (Motl the Operator) and "Ikh vil zayn a mame ”(each directed by Joseph Seiden ).
From 1953 she was active in the theater and radio in Los Angeles, where she took over both Yiddish and English parts.
The composer Walter Scharf was her nephew (the son of her sister Bessie). On her death she left two sons, Sidney and Arthur Silverman. Her urn grave is in the Mount Sinai Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles.
