Preface (excerpt)

"One relies on drinks and food to nourish life (yangsheng), but if one does not know which substances are incompatible due to their respective properties and should be avoided together (xiangfan xiangji 相反 相 忌), and consumed them at random, the internal organs (wunei) will not harmonize and considerable disaster will immediately follow. Feeding life in this way harms life. I have examined the texts, sub-comments and commentaries of the pharmacopoeias of the different schools and found that each of the substances listed can be both harmful and beneficial, they leave the reader in the dark about what to do. In compiling this work, I have therefore placed the emphasis on selecting those facts which concern incompatible foods and foods to be avoided together so that those who wish to achieve good health will be able to use this information in their daily consumption of beverages and Look up food.
