Yoga Journal is an American media companyfoundedin May 1975 by the California Yoga Teachers Association andbased in San Francisco . It publishes the journal of the same name, a website and DVDs on yoga . In addition, the Yoga Journal organizes conferences on the subjects of nutrition , fitness , wellness , fashion and beauty .
When yoga became popular in the United States in the mid-1990s, the magazine had a circulation of 66,000. In the fall of 1998, John Abbott, an investment banker and yoga enthusiast, bought the magazine. In January 2000 the layout was completely changed. At that time, the number of copies was between 90,000 and 350,000 copies, and in 2010 the magazine was read by over a million readers. In September 2006, Yoga Journal was acquired by Active Interest Media , which also publishes the Vegetarian Times , Black Belt Magazine, and more.
German edition
Piranha Media has been publishing a German edition of the magazine since 2009 , which appears every two months. Editor is Alexander Lacher , co-editor is Michi Kern . The first edition appeared in May 2009 with 52,000 copies.
Awards
Yoga Journal won five consecutive Maggie Awards from the Western Publications Association for "Best Health and Fitness Magazine" and in 2007 it received the top award for "Best Comprehensive Client Publication ". The Forbes Magazine described the the Yoga Journal website as the "most far-reaching and impressive Yoga site".
