Michi Kern

Michael "Michi" Kern (born October 1966 in Munich ) is a German restaurateur , organizer and yoga teacher . He has also been called the “King of Munich nightlife” and, alongside Wolfgang Nöth , has decisively shaped the nightlife of the Bavarian capital from the early 1990s.

Life

Kern grew up in the Munich district of Sendling and attended the upper level of the Asam-Gymnasium in Munich- Giesing , where he graduated from high school in 1987. After he made as a paramedic at the Bavarian Red Cross to community service .

gastronomy

As a high school graduate and doing community service, he worked as a dishwasher in the "Café Iwan" and then also as a doorman in the " Tanzlokal Großeswahn ", a Munich independent club in the 1980s.

In 1988 he moved to the Isarvorstadt district , began studying linguistics at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and continued to work in the catering industry, mainly in service and later as the manager of the Schwabing “Babalu Bar”, where he made his first contacts to the techno scene. In 1990 he opened Munich's first techno club , the Babalu Club . He broke off his studies. Afterwards, Kern went to Wolfgang Nöth in the halls of the former Munich-Riem Airport , where he participated in Peter Wacha's techno club " Ultrasound ". He also worked as a bartender in " P1 ". Kern organized the Sven Väth events in Munich and was in a circle of friends with Rainald Goetz , who often mentions him in his books Rave and Garbage for All .

In 1993, Kern and his school friend Uli Springer took over the “Café Reitschule” near the English Garden . Alone or usually with various business partners, legendary Munich trendy bars such as the "Nachtkantine", the " Ultraschall II " and the "Wiesn World" followed, all three in the Kunstpark Ost , the Munich "Pacha" , which in 2000 was the first Pacha club outside Spain was the training restaurant "Roeckl", the "Zoozie'z", the vegan restaurants "Saf" in the "Zerwirk" and "Café King", the "Peter and Paul", "The Grill", a vegetarian restaurant and a steakhouse Kern opened the “Kong Bar”, the “Kytaro”, the “Mondo”, the “Taverna Cavos”, the “OskarMaria” brasserie and the “8Seasons” club under one roof in the former premises of the Munich Mövenpick in the Lenbachhaus the Schrannenhalle has a vegan stall called “Boonian”.

The "Saf" in the "Zerwirk", which existed from 2005 to 2008, was the city's first vegan restaurant; the Süddeutsche Zeitung stated in April 2008 that it was "Germany's first vegan restaurant". It was even featured in travel articles for the New York Times and Wallpaper magazine .

yoga

Due to a personal crisis around the year 2000, Kern found yoga on the advice of a friend. Today he runs two yoga schools in Munich with his friends Antje Schäfer and Petros Haffenrichter . Since April 2009 he has been publishing the German offshoot of the Yoga Journal with Alexander Lacher .

Others
