Brasserie Lipp in Paris

A brasserie is a restaurant that is less formal and more simply furnished than a restaurant . However, in contrast to a bistro , bar-tabac or café, it has a larger selection of warm dishes. The term is also used today for restaurants of this style in non- francophone countries.

The word Brasserie (Brassicole) actually means brewery . The use of the term for restaurants probably goes back to home breweries and breweries in northern France and the Walloon part of Belgium , which often offer rustic home-style cooking in addition to serving beer .
