Yomi ( Japanese 黄泉 , meaning underworld or hell ) is a Latvian folk metal band from Riga .

history

The band was founded in April 2013 in the Latvian capital Riga by the singer Khurr, who also plays the folk instruments, and the drummer Audrey. Due to several changes of line-up within the band and the lack of time for the musicians for the group, it was dissolved that same year.

Nevertheless, although the band only reformed in 2014, the first songs were created that later made it on the demo album Age of the Gods . Guitarist Isaz, bassist Tom and drummer Stephanie have joined Yomi as new musicians . The demo album Land of the Gods , which was released in January 2015, was reissued in September of the same year with two additional titles.

Yomi landed at the Russian label Sound Age Productions and released the second studio album with Genpei in November of the following year . About a year later, the band's third album, Land of the Rising Sun, was released. In addition, drummer Stephanie and guitarist Isaz left the band, so Tom switched to guitar, Audrey returned as drummer and with Dima a new guitarist was integrated.

music

Yomi play folk metal that is heavily influenced by Skyforger . The band mentions God of Shamisen and the Yoshida Brothers as further influences . Instead of traditional European instruments, the musicians use Japanese musical instruments such as shamisen , shakuhachi and jew's harp . The pieces are mostly set in the mid-tempo range, the vocals are mainly growled . The guitar mostly follows the sound of traditional instruments. It was often criticized that the music sounds very monotonous. The music is not melodic, the only seemingly melodic aspects are produced by traditional Japanese instruments.

The texts, which are mainly written in English and occasionally include Japanese verses , mainly describe the mythology and history of Japan . The debut album deals with Japanese fairy tales, myths and legends, while the second album deals with the Gempei war between the Minamoto and the Taira clan. The third album Land of the Rising Sun takes up the Mongol invasions in Japan between 1273 and 1281.
