Yoo-Chang Nah (born February 2, 1969 in Seoul ) is a South Korean singer ( baritone ).

biography

The Seoul-born baritone Yoo-Chang Nah received piano lessons at the age of six. He studied singing and pedagogy (Magister degree) at Seoul National University , then musicology (Magister degree) parallel to an engagement as a solo singer at the National Opera. He completed further singing studies at the Cologne University of Music and Dance , where he passed the diploma examination with distinction for lied, oratorio and opera singing. In 2003 he also passed his concert exam.

Yoo-Chang Nah won prizes at numerous competitions such as the Schubert Competition (Seoul), Bergheim Singing Competition (NRW), the Alexander Girardi International Singing Competition (Coburg), the s'Hertogenbosch International Vocal Competition (Netherlands) and the Cologne International Singing Competition Helga and Paul Hohnen Foundation.

Appearances

He was a member of the ensemble at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein and at the Landestheater Detmold . In addition, Yoo-Chang Nah had guest contracts at the Rostock, Hof, Wuppertal, Osnabrück, Erfurt, Koblenz, Kazan (Russia) and the National Opera (Korea) theaters. He sang key roles such as Papageno ( Die Zauberflöte ), Tsar ( Tsar and Zimmermann ), Posa ( Don Carlos ), Marcello (La Bohème), Silvio (Pagliacci), Lescaut (Manon Lescaut), Don Pasquale (Don Pasquale) , Onegin (Eugene Onegin), Dandini (La Cenerentola) and Heerrufer (Lohengrin). He also took on leading roles in operettas and various contemporary operas. As a soloist in concert and oratorio, Yoo-Chang Nah has performed with the WDR Radio Orchestra, the NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover, the Radiophilharmonie Netherlands, the North German Philharmonic, the North West German Philharmonic and the South Westphalia Philharmonic. He sang under conductors such as R. Goebel, M. Creed, P. Neumann, H. Froschauer, C. Spering, R. Gritton, R. Otto, P. Kuentz and P. Ahmann and gave concerts in the Cologne Philharmonic, im Concertgebouw Amsterdam and the Teatro Olimpico in Rome. Concert tours have taken him to Austria, Belgium, France, Canada, South Korea, Russia and the USA.

Recordings

Yoo-Chang Nah took part in numerous radio recordings and CD productions for the WDR radio orchestra, including works by Marschner, Lortzing, Weber and Wolf. The recording of the operetta "Coscoletto" (J. Offenbach) won the German Record Critics' Prize in 2006. Since 2005, Yoo-Chang Nah has been teaching solo singing at the Cologne University of Music and Dance, and since 2010 at the Dr. Hoch's Conservatory in Frankfurt am Main.
