Yossi Ghinsberg

Yossi Ghinsberg (born April 25, 1959 in Tel Aviv ) is an Israeli author and environmental activist .

At the beginning of November 1981 Ghinsberg got lost in the Bolivian part of the Amazon and survived for three weeks. He described his adventure in his 1985 book Ba-hazarah mi-Tuitsi in Hebrew , which was published in English in 1993 under the title Back from Tuichi . With Laws of the Jungle: Jaguars Don't Need Self-Help Books (2008), he achieved another successful presentation. A film adaptation of his first book was released in 2017 with Daniel Radcliffe in the lead role.

Ghinsberg uses his international fame to promote various environmental projects that focus on sustainability. His good relations with natives in Bolivia make him a mediator for both sides and at the same time a political issue in Bolivia.

biography

His family survived the Shoah . After three years of service with the Israeli army, during which he established close contact with the Bedouins of the Negev desert , he decided to travel to get to know remote peoples. His first trip took him to Latin America, where he and two friends took the opportunity in La Paz, Bolivia , to join a geologist's excursion to get to the jungle that is otherwise inaccessible to tourists. The geologist turned out to be ignorant, due to false information Ghinsberg lost contact with Kevin Wallace, with whom he had separated from the geologist. Wallace was lucky enough to be found by a group of hunters who hunted the area twice a year. But Ghinsberg was missing for three weeks. Due to the beginning of the rainy season, the authorities had ruled out survival in the jungle and soon stopped the search. But Wallace went on a search with a privately paid team and found his friend, who then had to be hospitalized for three months.

Wallace immediately began looking for his third friend, Markus Stamm, whom he and Ghinsberg believed to be safe in the company of the alleged geologist. Stamm remained missing, the alleged geologist was a criminal from Austria known to the authorities, Karl Ruprecht, who was on the run.

After returning from the Amazon, Ghinsberg studied philosophy and economics. Then his commitment to the sustainable use of natural resources began. He was able to negotiate $ 1.25 million with the Inter-American Development Bank , which was invested in the creation of a solar system in the jungle and in the education of the indigenous population in the canton of San José de Uchupiamonas in San Buenaventura, Bolivia . He stayed in San José for three years to accompany the project. At that time, together with the natives, he developed the idea for Chalalan, which was subsequently implemented and is now considered a showcase project for ecotourism . The project became internationally known when it was presented in the documentary Gringo Trails and the ideas for sustainable tourism that were implemented there met with worldwide resonance. The connection to Conservation International in Washington eventually led to the establishment of the Madidi National Park , a national park the size of Slovenia around San José. Ghinsberg supports the natives to this day, from intellectual property rights to protests against the El Bala dam project, which has been planned since 1998 and represents one of the greatest threats to the national park. The residents of the affected regions have appointed Ghinsberg as the international spokesman for their protests against El Bala .

Between 1995 and 2002 Ghinsberg became increasingly involved in helping opiate addicts.

In 2001, at the height of the second Intifada, Ghinsberg organized a music festival to promote reconciliation between Israelis and Palestinians.

Since 2001 he has also appeared as a motivational speaker. His survival in the Amazon can hardly be explained, but in his depictions it was the unconditional will to live, his optimism and the apparently inexhaustible power of self-motivation that kept him alive.

In 2009 Ghinsberg founded Collecteco , a company promoting the use of recycled materials. The company's self-imposed ideal is a world without garbage.

In 2013 Ghinsberg co-founded Headbox . In 2015 he brought out the Binq app , which provides additional information about people.

Yossi Ghinsberg has four children and lives in Caesarea with his wife Belinda .

Ghinsberg's struggle for survival in the jungle was the template for the 2017 film Jungle, starring Daniel Radcliffe .
