Coordinates: 34 ° 18 ′  S , 148 ° 18 ′  E Young Shire was a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of New South Wales . The area was 2,694 km² and last had about 12,000 inhabitants. In 2016 it was on the Hilltops Council .

Young was located in the south-eastern region of the state about 380 km west of the metropolis Sydney and 160 km northwest of the Australian capital Canberra . The area comprised 32 hamlets and villages: Ashville, Bendick Murrell, Berthong, Boara, Bulla Creek, Burrangong, Crowther, Kikiamah, Maimuru, Memagong, Milvale, Monteagle, Murringo, Pitstone, Shirrenden Hill, Thuddungra, Tubbul, Tyagong, Victoria Gully, Victoria Hill, Wambanumba, Warrangong, Weedallion, Wirrimah, North Young, South Young and parts of Bribbaree, Greenethorpe, Grogan, Koorawatha, Wombat and Young. The seat of the Shire Council was in the village of Young in the center of the LGA, where now about 7,200 people live.

The Young Shire Council had nine members who were elected by LGA residents. Young was not divided into wards. The mayor of the council was also recruited from among the councilors.
