Yuhanna ibn Masawaih (completely Abu Zakarīyā Yūḥannā ibn Māsawaih , also in Persian for short ابن ماسویه Ibn Masawaih , DMG Ibn Māsawaih ), German (Johannes) Mesuë the Elder , Latin Johannes Mesue (senior) (* around 777 in Khuz near Ninive ; † around 857 in Samarra ), was a Syrian doctor and writer of Persian descent.

Life

Yūhannā was a Nestorian Christian , came from a family of doctors in Gundishapur (Persia) and was the son of Abū Yūḫannā Māsawaih. He studied with Gabriel ibn Bochtischu , whose successor he later became, and with Isho bar Nun (823-828), the later Catholicos . He was appointed head of a hospital by Caliph Hārūn ar-Rashīd and also served his successors al-Ma'mun , al-Mutasim , al-Wathiq and al-Mutawakkil . Al-Ma'mun entrusted him with the management of the translation work in the House of Wisdom in Baghdad , but Yūhannā's own translations have not survived.

His most popular work, the Axioms of Medicine , a collection of 132 aphorisms that emphasize the dependence of the physical on the mental condition, was also distributed in Latin translation in the Latin West and was ascribed to John of Damascus in the early Latin prints (which is probably one of Representation of Saint John of Damascus in the Milan Cathedral surrounded by doctors' pictures ). There are also numerous other medical publications, e.g. T. only in fragments.

He was also credited with a medical prescription book called the Grabadin .
