The Yves Saint Laurent Museum (Arabic: متحف إيف سان لوران بمراكش, French: Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech , stylized: mYSLm ) is a museum in Marrakech , Morocco, dedicated to the French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent . The museum complex also contains a library and an auditorium and is also intended to serve as a cultural center.

The museum goes back to an initiative of Saint Laurent's longtime partner Pierre Bergé , who died in 2017 - one month before the museum opened.

location

The museum is located in the new town of Marrakech, northeast of the historic old town. It is located on "Rue Yves Saint Laurent" and is directly adjacent to the Jardin Majorelle , which Saint Laurent and Bergé acquired in 1980.

history

The museum building was designed by Studio Ko by architects Olibier Marty and Karl Fournier.

After around four years of construction, the museum was officially opened on October 14, 2017. The construction cost around 15 million euros.

Around the same time, a museum about Saint Laurent was also opened in Paris . The museum in Paris is showing a retrospective. The exhibition in Marrakech, on the other hand, is dedicated to the passions of Saint Laurent that inspired his work.

Based on Yves Saint Laurent's work, the exterior design of the building plays with edges and curves. In addition to the formal language of Saint Laurent, the architecture is also based on Moroccan and Islamic art . The facade of the three-storey building is divided into a lower part made of pink granite and an upper part made of bricks. The reddish brown Moroccan terracotta tiles are incorporated into the facade in six different patterns. Like many Moroccan houses, the museum building has no windows facing the street.

Visitors get to the main entrance of the museum through a circular courtyard. The entrance is hidden behind a granite wall with the famous Yves Saint Laurent logo.

The building has a floor area of 4000 m². In addition to the exhibition space, the building contains an auditorium with 150 seats, a library, a boutique and a café. The library contains mostly rare works on Berber culture . The design of the café was based on that of the studio of Yves Saint Laurent.

Showrooms

In the dark black 400 m² main exhibition room, 50 dresses by Yves Saint Laurent are presented, illuminated by small spotlights. Drawings, photographs and documentaries are also presented on video screens, accompanied by music and narration. For conservation reasons, the clothes presented are regularly exchanged. The exhibition relates to topics such as, masculinity, femininity, Morocco, gardens and art, which already played an important role for Saint Laurent. The exhibits include Le Smoking and the Mondrian dress , which is considered to be the most copied dress in history.

In addition to the main exhibition area, the museum building also contains a gallery for temporary exhibitions and photographs. Every year the photo gallery shows works by a different artist who has worked with Saint Laurent.
