The Zurich House

The Zürichhaus (Domstrasse 17-21) is an office complex in Hamburg , named after the Zürich insurance company based there . Among other things, it stands on the site of the former Hamburg town hall, Große Reichenstraße 37 .

Description and history

The building is immediately adjacent to the Afrikahaus to the west and is located at the intersection of Domstrasse and Willy-Brandt-Strasse ; the north side is adjacent to Große Reichenstrasse . The building was built from 1989 to 1992 after a competition was announced in 1988. The construction plans come from the architects Gerkan, Marg and Partners ; the design of the halls with water basins and trees was based on plans by Hinnerk Wehberg , Gustav Lange, Gundolf Eppinger and Wieland Schmidtke.

The Zürichhaus has conventional clinker brick facades based on the neighboring office buildings from the 1920s. The building has a comb-shaped floor plan. This surrounds two glass entrance halls as protection against noise and dust. The side of the building facing Willy-Brandt-Straße has a convex curved glass front in front of the actual facade , which is supposed to take on this function here. The entrance to the underground car park is on the side facing Große Reichenstrasse.
