Builder and client

The previous building, the house at Große Reichenstrasse 31 (left).

The Afrikahaus was built in 1899 on behalf of Adolph Woermann and Eduard Woermann as an office building for the trading company C. Woermann founded by Carl Woermann in 1837 , operator of the Woermann Line and the German East-Africa Line . The house at Große Reichenstrasse 31 , an old Hamburg town house , was demolished for construction.

The architect Martin Haller designed the facade in such a way that it underlines the overseas trade relations; the coloring is based on the colors of the shipping company.

location

The "Afrikahaus" is centrally located in downtown Hamburg , roughly halfway between the Mönckebergstrasse shopping street , the town hall and the Speicherstadt . The Zürichhaus adjoins it to the west.

The Africa House as a memorial

The "Africa House" was placed under monument protection in 1972 . The building documents the type of construction of the Hamburg office building around 1900. It combines modern construction technology and functionality. As an architectural monument, it is regularly opened to visitors with guided tours on the “Open Monument Day”.

A few years ago it was completely restored and reopened in February 1999 with modern office space. During the renovation, care was taken to ensure that the typical style features such as cast iron supports, capped ceilings, still doors, as well as the wall mosaic with African motifs and the cast iron portal elephants by Carl Börner are preserved.

Todays use

The Afrikahaus is still family-owned and rented to various companies. The companies that have rented offices and space in the Afrikahaus today include media, event and personnel agencies, as well as the steak restaurant Estancia Steak . The import and export company C. Woermann GmbH & Co has also been located there since the house was built .
