FS Horgen after casting off in miles

The Lake Zurich Ferry Horgen – Meilen AG (FHM) is a Swiss public limited company and operates year-round ferry services on Lake Zurich between Horgen and Meilen .

Ferry service

FS Burg (left) and FS Meilen intersect before Meilen

The ferries usually run every ten minutes between 6:00 am and 10:00 pm, and every 7½ or six minutes at peak times. The ferry connection shortens the travel distance for private transport from the Zurich Oberland to Central Switzerland without having to take the detour via the Rapperswil lake embankment (around 18 kilometers south-east) or through the city of Zurich (around 15 kilometers north-west). The journey time is about ten minutes.

A large proportion of the journeys are made by commuters between the two shores of the lake.

In 2018, the five ferries carried 68,988 journeys, a total of 2,051,357 people, 1,240,301 cars and 17,341 trucks and trailers, as well as 102,065 two-wheelers on their roughly three-kilometer route.

history

Founder share for 1000 francs of the Lake Zurich ferry Horgen-Meilen AG from August 27, 1932

The company was founded on August 27, 1932 in Meilen. The 54 shareholders subscribed to a starting capital of 260,000 Swiss francs . The 6,000 shares with a nominal value of CHF 100 belong to 1,800 shareholders, are not listed and are only traded over the counter .

After technical difficulties at the beginning with the first ferry, the Schwan , the ferry service could be started every half hour on November 4, 1933. On August 26, 1937, the Swiss radio DRS produced a report and documented a passage into the engine room, the upper deck, the navigating bridge and the control cabin.

Between 1942 and 1946 operations had to be stopped due to the Second World War . From the summer of 1946 the ferry ran every hour, and in the period up to 1968 demand increased so that an uninterrupted shuttle service had to be introduced.

In 1969, the new Schwan ferry replaced the elderly veteran. Starting in 1975, the frequency was steadily increased due to the demand and reached today's 6-minute frequency with the commissioning of the meanwhile fifth ferry at peak times in 2003. In 2015 the company decided to replace the FS Meilen from 1979 with a new ferry of the same name. The old ferry Meilen was scrapped in spring 2018. The new ferry was built by the Öswag shipyard in Linz; Baptized in the name Meilen and put into service on September 24, 2017.

fleet

The fleet comprises five ferries (FS) , which were built by Bodan-Werft Metallbau GmbH in Kressbronn ( Germany ) and Österreichische Schiffswerften AG in Linz ( Austria ). The fleet consists of the diesel engine ferries

  • FS Schwan (commissioning: September 1st, 1969, overhauled 1999)
  • FS Horgen (commissioning: May 26, 1991)
  • FS Zürisee (commissioning: August 15, 1999)
  • FS Burg (commissioning: September 5, 2003)
  • FS Meilen (commissioning: September 24, 2017)

Thanks to their Voith-Schneider drive - two propellers are installed in the longitudinal axis of the ships - the ferries are extremely manoeuvrable, can turn without changing position and have an extremely short stopping distance of 1½ to 2 ship lengths (80 to 120 meters).
