Sterndrive

a sterndrive

The Z-drive is a so-called gearbox with clutch for motor boats as well as for smaller work vehicles and inland vessels. This drive is attached to the transom and is therefore outside the boat, while the engine is inside the hull. The shaft emerging horizontally from the motor is forwarded in a Z-shape to the lower-lying propeller shaft.

On fast sport boats under 10 meters (33 feet ) in length, this is a very common type of propulsion that is supposed to combine the advantages of inboard with those of outboard motors . Compared to pure inboard engines and classic shaft systems , boats with Z-drives are much more maneuverable. Compared to an outboard motor, boats with an inboard motor and sterndrive are usually much quieter. In addition, the range of economical and powerful diesel engines for outboards is only very small, while in the inboard area, including alternative drive concepts, the selection is greater.

Another advantage of the sterndrive in combination with an inboard is its price. A comparable outboard is more expensive than a sterndrive inboard. However, the articulated connection between the sterndrive and the boat hull as well as their seals and moving parts are subject to wear (as is the case with the outboard).
